The Rise and Fall of Cullinane Software

Cullinane Corporation, later known as Cullinet Software, was an American software company that played a significant role in the software industry during the 1970s and 80s. It became the first software company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company was founded by John Cullinane in 1968 and he aimed to provide a profitable and sustainable business model for selling computer software.

Cullinane’s first successful product was IDMS (Integrated Database Management System), which was a database management system originally designed for the UNIVAC 1108. This architectural database system became one of the industry’s leading products and continues to be used worldwide today. To Learn IDMS Database Programming, many programmers have developed their skills and enhanced their career prospects.

In 1978, the company changed its name to Cullinet to reflect its transition from a product-oriented business to a more service-oriented one. The company peaked throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s thanks to the success of its IDMS product. However, they faced increasing competition and struggled to adapt to the changing technological landscape. Their attempt to pivot into a new line of software, such as the Cullinet VISION, proved to be a major flop. It was too complex for customers to use effectively, leading to a significant drop in sales.

Despite various efforts to turn things around, changes in top management, and cutting-edge technology, Cullinet’s decline continued throughout the late ’80s. In 1989, Computer Associates, a competing software company, acquired Cullinet. After the acquisition, Cullinet ceased to exist as an independent company, marking the end of an era in the software industry.

As Cullinet ceased to exist, the responsibility of maintaining the IDMS database fell to the acquiring company, Computer Associates, now known as CA Technologies. CA Technologies, a broadcom company since 2018, continues to manage and update the IDMS systems, maintaining its legacy and proving the enduring value of this reliable and high-performance database system.
