Min tro är att det är jobbet av DET avdelningen att förstå affärsstrategin, det organisatoriska uppförandet och konkurrenskraftig strategi för deras företag. One of the job functions of an IT executive must be to identify the ‘core competency’ of their organization. Customized IT solution must be applied to those business processes and hence build a ‘sustainable’ competitive advantage. For business processes that are not part of company’s core competency, automation can either be outsourced or SaaS can be enabled or ERP applications can be used.

I think Carr’s point might be better made with this question:
In 2009, name a company that is using IT as a strategic differentiator?
Historically, some firms that excelled at IT and systems integration reaped great rewards, but I think Carr’s point is that the big adoption/innovation period is long over. Of course innovations may continue, but it’s arguable whether such innovations are happening “in” IT. IT will certainly be a part, but I almost wish that Enterprise Architecture could distance itself from it’s IT origins, because I think it’s holding Enterprise Architects back.
