Global Talent War
November 15, 2007 by Raj Sheelvant
The country that lays a strong infrastructure which in turn allows its citizens to innovate will be able to lead in the near future according to the author of Extreme Future Dr. Canton. Competitive Advantage of a country will now be more dependent on creating, nurturing and attracting the best available talent. As global talent war heats up, I see a trend where more and more countries extend their welcome mat to attract the most talented workers. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada have been trend setters in being innovative attracting talented immigrants. These countries have the database and match the demand for the labor by providing incentives to attract the right kind of immigrants. Not only that, countries are looking to make it easier for the talent to migrate on a temporary basis. We see it happening in Europe where the skilled labor migrates temporarily to the country where that particular skill is in demand.
There is an undercurrent of global labor movement which I think will lead the rise of ‘Global Citizen’. It’s not just the developed world that is attracting labor from the third world countries. Some of the emerging countries like India and Vietnam that are growing at a breakneck speed have a severe shortage of labor with management skills. They are opening up ways for people with that skill sets to migrate and work on a temporary basis in that country. The workers from the developed countries are taking up these new jobs to gain new experience even if it means to be living in harsher conditions than their home countries. The concept of dual citizenship is getting more and more popular. As countries start aggressively going after talent, I won’t be surprised to see the most talented worker becoming citizen of multiple countries. As the air travel gets faster and cheaper, global commute will become the norm for these ‘Global Citizens’. As the technology infrastructure solidifies with an ability to transmit data at a bandwidth that is exponentially broader, the work gets moved around at a faster rate. All these trends will lead to creation of talented nomads, and I would like to call them ‘Global Flies’.
